ANCIENT AIRS & DANCES A set of 2 movements - Balletto & Passo Mezzo e Mascherada - from Ottorino Respighi's delightful Ancient Airs and Dances, Set 1. Based on Renaissance lute pieces (including some by Vincenzo Galilei, father of Galileo!), these ebullient works are captivating and uplifting.
THE HEAVENS ARE TELLING Composed originally as a chorus for Haydn’s The Creation, the triumphant The Heavens are Telling was first performed in 1779. With text taken from Genesis as well as Milton’s Paradise Lost, this exuberant work is not merely a Classical standard, but a thrilling masterpiece.
LARGO al FACTOTUM (Make way for the factotum!) is an aria from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, sung at the initial entrance of the title character. Who doesn’t know this awesomely hummable song? Even Rossini would probably find it amusing that his aria has become even more famous due to the Bugs Bunny cartoon, “The Rabbit of Seville”.
NESSUN DORMA Giacomo Puccini's Nessun Dorma (Let No One Sleep), from Turandot, is one of the best-known arias in all opera. Popularized even further by Luciano Pavarotti as well as Plácido Domingo and The Three Tenors, it is instantly recognizable as well as timelessly elegant.
NIMROD The most famous of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, the beautiful Nimrod Adagio has been used in films such as Dunkirk, as well as at services of remembrance and the opening Olympic Ceremonies.
O MIO BABBINO CARO is one of Puccini’s best-loved arias. Lauretta sings ‘O mio babbino caro’ to persuade her father Gianni Schicchi to help her and her boyfriend Rinuccio Donati. It is an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing, and feuding in medieval Florence.
