ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND by Irving Berlin
ALWAYS (Irving Berlin) is the quintessential love song, written for (and gifted to!) Irving Berlin's fiancée, Ellin McKay. One of Berlin's greatest hits, it has been recorded countless times by icons including Ella Fitzgerald, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, and Leonard Cohen.
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS Our 3-minute-plus suite of Gershwin's iconic jazz-influenced symphonic poem hits all of the main melodies, and gives the players plenty of musical license. An exemplary example of American ingenuity, Gershwin's purpose for An American in Paris was to 'portray the impressions of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city, listens to the various street noises, and absorbs the French atmosphere.' Needless to say, he was somewhat successful.
THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE by DeSylva, Brown & Henderson
If The Best Things in Life Are Free hadn't been a beloved favorite already, its appearance in 2022's The White Lotus had audiences worldwide singing the tune. Recorded by Bing Crosby, Sam Cooke, Mel Tormé and Michael Feinstein among others, it's not only instantly recognizable but refreshingly pertinent in its message.
BLUE SKIES (Irving Berlin) On opening night of the 1926 musical Betsy, audiences demanded 24 encores of Blue Skies from star Belle Baker. During the final rendition, Ms. Baker forgot her lyrics, so composer Irving Berlin sang them out from his front row seat. Famously performed by Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Willie Nelson and Danny Kaye, Blue Skies is one of the most recognizable songs in the world.
CHARLESTON (Mack & Johnson) Revel in the Roaring 20's with our rollicking rendition of the Charleston! The dance craze called The Charleston swept the world in 1923 with its captivating dance steps and syncopated rhythms.
CHICAGO (Fred Fisher) Don't miss this fabulous arrangement of Chicago - That Toddling Town for small ensemble! Made famous by Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, this all time favorite song about the Windy City is sure to make any crowd want to dance!
CIRIBIRIBIN (Alberto Pestalozza) This song was made famous by Frank Sinatra and is the original Harry James Band theme song. This merry Italian ballad by Oscar Pestalozza is an all-time favorite that has been re-recorded by the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby and many more and was featured in the 1979 movie Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty.
DO IT AGAIN! by George Gershwin
EVERYBODY STEP by Irving Berlin
EVERYBODY'S DOING IT NOW (Irving Berlin)
According to his biographer Laurence Bergreen, "Everybody's Doing It Now" was Irving Berlin's attempt to exploit the early 20th Century dance craze in America by "writing a generic dance with a deceptively casual title". Berlin himself said, "It was an idea out of the air. I wanted a dance song; everybody was doing it. I just sat down and wrote the thing as it was." The idea worked, and the song became "the standard tune of the dance craze".
FASCINATING RHYTHM This Gershwin favorite was first introduced in Lady Be Good, starring Fred and Adele Astaire. It has been recorded and performed by greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Tommy Dorsey, Michael Feinstein and more!
I CAN'T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE, BABY One of the most-recorded songs in history, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby has been recorded by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald... and in 2014, Lady Gaga along with Tony Bennett!
I LOVE A PIANO by Irving Berlin
IT HAD TO BE YOU is the iconic romantic song, and also the title song to the film When Harry Met Sally. It has been recorded by Barbara Streisand, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and more!
I'VE GOT A CRUSH ON YOU An immediately recognizable jazz standard, George & Ira Gershwins' I've Got a Crush on You has been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, Sammy Davis Jr., Michael Bublé, Kristin Chenoweth, and many more!
MACK THE KNIFE Part of The Threepenny Opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Mack The Knife became a massive hit when sung by Bobby Darin in 1959. Also recorded by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Robbie Williams and Louis Armstrong, it is instantly recognizable from countless movies and television shows.
THE MAN I LOVE is another Gershwin standout, from the musical Strike Up the Band. It is one of the most famous Broadway standards, recently included in the 2015 Broadway musical, An American in Paris.
PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ (Irving Berln) A hit for Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and the inimitable Taco in the 1980s, Irving Berlin's Puttin' On The Ritz is the quintessential Classic American song. The title refers to London's Ritz hotel; the lyrics describe the luxurious lifestyle of the wealthy during the Roaring Twenties. Featured in numerous films, TV shows and musicals, this song is a perennial favorite!
Our RHAPSODY IN BLUE is a stunning arrangement-suite of George Gershwin’s signature work for solo piano and jazz band. It premiered in 1924 at An Experiment in Modern Music at Aeolian Hall in New York City, with Paul Whiteman and his band backing up Gershwin himself on the piano.
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was an acclaimed hit song decades before the eponymous movie hit theaters. Aside from Gene Kelly's iconic version (not to mention his dancing), it has been sung by Judy Garland, Jimmy Durante, Bing Crosby & Rosemary Clooney, and the K-Pop group Girls' Generation.
